Key Takeaways
  • Kalshi must restrict Washington’s access to markets covering sports, elections, politics, and several other categories.
  • JPMorgan reportedly ended a core banking relationship with Polymarket in 2025.
  • Coffeezilla accused prediction platforms and their promoters of disguising gambling as investing.

Prediction markets are facing pressure on several fronts as state officials, financial institutions, and prominent online critics challenge the industry’s attempts to distinguish event contracts from gambling.

A Washington judge has ordered Kalshi to withdraw many of its most popular markets from the state.

Meanwhile, JPMorgan reportedly cut a key banking relationship with rival Polymarket over regulatory concerns.

The developments coincided with a new video from YouTube investigator Coffeezilla, who has spoken out against the accelerating “gamblification” of financial platforms.

Kalshi Must Restrict Major Washington Markets

King County Superior Court Judge John McHale has ordered Kalshi to stop offering or facilitating a broad range of event contracts to Washington residents.

The restrictions cover sports, elections, politics, entertainment, culture, technology, science,e and “mentions” — markets that let customers speculate on whether a public figure will use a particular word or phrase.

Kalshi can continue offering contracts connected to commodities, climate, economics, cs, and finance.

Washington customers may also close positions they already hold in the prohibited categories.

The company must introduce an IP address and residency-based block by Aug. 19, followed by a multi-source geofencing system by Sept. 2.

Kalshi could face penalties of $120,000 per day if it fails to complete the second stage on time, KOMO News reported.

JPMorgan Cut Polymarket’s Banking Account

Polymarket has encountered a different form of regulatory pressure.

JPMorgan terminated a banking relationship with the prediction platform in 2025 because of compliance concerns, the Financial Times reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The bank reportedly told Polymarket in October 2025 that it would need to move the account to another financial institution.

The platform has since secured a replacement banking provider whose identity has not been disclosed.

Polymarket disputed the suggestion that it had been completely cut off from the bank.

In a statement to the FT, the company said it still maintains a “close, active relationship” with JPMorgan through other entities, operational arrangements, and customer-fund flows.

The bank has also reportedly preserved some connections in case it pursues a role in a potential Polymarket initial public offering.

Coffeezilla: ‘Everybody Wants to Say Yes to This’

Coffeezilla has spoken out against the rise of prediction markets and what he describes as the gamification of gambling.

He initially directed his anger at headlines suggesting that Gen Z investors were voluntarily blurring the boundary between financial planning and sports betting.

The creator argued that those stories placed too much responsibility on young people and too little on the companies that place investment accounts, retirement products, and event contracts within the same applications.

“Is it any wonder that Gen Z is confused about trading versus investing versus gambling?” he asked.

Coffeezilla said the confusion was predictable when financial apps describe sports and other events wagering as trading.

In his view, the industry’s terminology allows companies to offer gambling-like products to audiences that might reject a conventional casino or sportsbook.

“This is different. This is predicting,” he said, mimicking the justification used by promoters.

Coffeezilla argued that influencers were performing a similar exercise.

Some personalities who would not promote casinos or sportsbooks were now accepting prediction-market deals because the products were presented as financial or informational tools.

“Pretty much everyone now is saying yes to one of these companies,” he claimed.

He highlighted entrepreneur Patrick Bet-David, who previously said gambling promotions did not fit his brand but later described Kalshi as a platinum sponsor of his Vault Conference.

“You can see the cope in the mind of the influencer,” he said.

“Everybody wants to say yes to this.”

The video also criticized financial platforms that seek to combine long-term savings, active trading, and prediction contracts into a single “super app.”

Coffeezilla Attacks Federal Intervention With Kalshi

Coffeezilla’s video did not directly examine the Washington order.

Instead, he connected his broader criticism to the CFTC’s intervention in New York’s separate case against Kalshi.

On Aug. 11, the regulator invoked emergency powers and directed Kalshi to continue operating normally

The CFTC said a potential New York injunction threatened the stability of a federally regulated marketplace.

Coffeezilla mocked the regulator’s definition of the emergency.

Rather than being “asleep at the wheel,” Coffeezilla said regulators were “very active at the wheel” in protecting the expansion of prediction markets.

“They’re ordering Kalshi, the exchange, to not comply with New York State,” he said.

The creator also pointed to changes in Kalshi’s marketing language.

He said the company had previously promoted opportunities to “bet on the headlines” but now emphasizes trading, markets,s and hedging uncertainty.

Adding: “They say stuff like, ‘We’re trading. We’re just a market.”

‘Thinly Veiled Legal Gambling’

Coffeezilla went on to criticize Kalshi’s self-exclusion system, noting that the maximum exclusion period was one year.

“If you know anything about addiction, it’s like, wait, why isn’t there a lifetime ban option?” he asked.

He argued that a temporary restriction appeared designed to bring customers back rather than to permanently protect those worried about compulsive behavior.

“Just take a break. Come back to us in a year, when famously addictions stop being addictions,” he said sarcastically.

Coffeezilla further highlighted a treatment provider promoted alongside the feature whose website described its service as therapy for gambling addiction.

“Do we even need more evidence that this is just thinly veiled legal gambling for all 50 states?” he asked.
